Mount Monster

Check my birding map for specific location.

Monster Mount is a conservation park south of Keith, the nice little town where I stayed the night before. There is a small, rocky peak (963m above sea level) with gorgeous woodland surrounding it. Just on the drive to the car park, I could see lots of birds. As soon as I got out of the van I could hear an odd call. It was almost like a frog but I didn't think they would be here. I went to investigate and found a White-eared Honeyeater. I have only had glimpses of this bird in all the times I have been visiting Australia. And here it was, singing away. Still not a great shot but my best so far.

All around I could hear parrots calling and screeching as they wheeled around. I found some Red-rumped Parrots and settled on tracking them. I have always found them to be just about the most tolerant of parrots and although they were watching me, they carried on with their familial business.

The track through the bush led around the back of the mount and as I followed it I was peering into the undergrowth and I was rewarded with a brown flash in front of me. I knew it had to be the Southern Scrub Robin. I sat on the track and watched as one appeared, then another and then a chick. It was absolutely magic as the juvenile ran around right in front of me.

I wandered around to the top of the mount, listening to the call of the whistlers. I could also see and hear some thornbill but they wouldn't co-operate with me. I had to settle for some Galah creating in the trees. I cannot get enough of these lovely birds. They are so entertaining.
