Coonalpyn is a little village south east of Adelaide. Drive through and you'd miss it. But, it is a lovely little place. And the star is the park with free powered caravan sites. I've never seen that before! The park is lined with huge gum trees and during the day, after I arrived, the noise grew and grew. Hundreds and hundreds of parrots roosted here overnight and in the morning they fed on the eucalypt flowers. It was incredible.
I have not seen Noisy Miners for quite sometime but there were here in numbers and, as you would expect, very noisy. Lots of them had juveniles they were feeding which made them fairly aggressive. Their domain was the ground and the low levels of the trees and they chased away any other bird that came near.
Further up the trees were the Rainbow Lorikeet. Very loud birds, often seen as a pest, with a gregarious nature, I love them. Also aggressive, any smaller birds were chased up higher.
Which was a shame, because they were Musk and Purple-crowned Lorikeet, both I really want to photograph. I chased them around, listening for their higher pitched buzz. Not easy in very tall gum trees. I shot the musk without even realising it and thankfully got the purple-crowned when I spotted a pair feeding right in front of me. I think if you walk around often enough, you'll spot them eventually.
Also present was a single, brightly coloured Eastern Rosella. I found it in the same place on both days and didn't see or hear any others. Odd.
At the top of the dead trees and the firs were Galah and Little Corella. All in all, there were a lot of parrots and an awful lot of noise. Fantastic.
